Editorial Review :

No matter how flexible and convenient digital information has become, we haven't done away with the need to see information in print. Extensible Style Language-Formatting Objects, or XSL-FO, is a set of tools developers and web designers use to describe page printouts of their XML (including XHTML) documents. If you need to produce high quality printed material from your XML documents, then XSL-FO provides the bridge.

XSL-FO is one of the few books to go beyond a basic introduction to the technology. While many books touch on XSL-FO in their treatment of XSLT, this book offers in-depth coverage of XSL-FO's features and strengths. Author Dave Pawson is well known in the XSLT and XSL-FO communities, and maintains the XSLT FAQ. An online version of this book has helped many developers master this technology. XSL-FO is the first time this reference is available in print.

The first part of the book provides an overview of the technology and introduces the XSL-FO vocabulary. The author discusses how to choose among today's implementations, explains how to describe pages, and shows you what is going on in the processor in terms of layout. You'll learn about the basics of formatting and layout as well as readability.

The second part focuses on smaller pieces: blocks, inline structures, graphics, color and character level formatting, concluding by showing how to integrate these parts into a coherent whole. XSL-FO also explores organizational aspects you'll need to consider?how to design your stylesheets strategically rather than letting them evolve on their own.

XSL-FO is more than just a guide to the technology; the book teaches you how to think about the formatting of your documents and guides you through the questions you'll need to ask to ensure that your printed documents meet the same high standards as your computer-generated content. Written for experienced XML developers and web designers, no other book contains as much useful information on this practical technology.

Questions & Answers
Question : How to avoid overlapping of table contents in XSL?
have a problem with long text in some table cells, that long words overflow the cells...text in cells with some words are wraped, but in the case ofone long word, this word overwrites the cell.i have tried hyphenate and wrap already, its not working for long words without space.could anyone help me or have any idea about this....?

Answer:
Tables overlap or "overload" they stretch, but divs dont. you might want to look in to using a CSS and
table format. If that doesn't help can you paste your code?

Question : XSL, Javascript, etc. - Is there a way to dynamically add the total number of elements with a common value?
I have an .xml doc with over 35,000 entries that I converted from an Excel file. Each entry (element/person) has the typical firstname, lastname, email, city, state child elements. I need to dynamically tabulate the total number of people who live in each state. Is there a way to do this with XSL, or Javascript?

Answer:
I am not sure (from your description) what you are trying to do, but you should (probably) look at JavaScript DOM...

Question : How to display an XML table in a HTML page using only an XSL?
I have successfully created an XML table using a XSL style sheet for the display. Now a part of my task is to import that table into a HTML file using only and only XSL... I know it can be done using java Script but how can I use XSL? any code?

Answer:
Not sure about importing it into a HTML page, but you can generate the HTML page in the same way you generate a table.http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/xml/library/x-tiphtml.html gives a set of XML, XSL and the target HTML so could give you an idea of what that means in real terms.

Question : What bolt does the 2002 diamondback xsl pro use in its shock link? I stripped a bolt and need a new one.?
What bolt does the 2002 diamondback xsl pro use in its shock link? I stripped a bolt and need a new one.?

Answer:
If you contact a Diamondback dealer or maybe shoot the company an email, you *might* get an answer to this question....maybe not. The only way to tell for sure is to measure the bolt for diameter and thread pitch. It's not likely you'll find the exact bolt at the hardware store or most bike shops, but you can make a stainless cap head allen bolt from the hardware store work just fine (I think...not sure exactly where this bolt goes in your linkage). The most common size by far in frame/shock bolts is 6mm x 1.0mm pitch, if that helps any. Just hafta measure it and see what you can come up with. Hope this helps some. :o)

Question : Are there any unix/linux programs that use an xsl file to convert xml and return the result?
A Java program would be fine too.

Answer:
Yes, there is. On my FreeBSD name of that program is xsltproc. It is a part of libxslt package, which itself is a part of gnome. So, the same program should be available on almost any Unix/Linux flavors.

Question : How do I link a CSS with an XML document or can I change font and other attributes in a XSL?
I'm struggling to get my XML working if I want to attribute it to a CSS. Can you link a CSS to an XML, if so, where should you put the link.OR can I change attributes in the XSL which I also have linked to it but at the moment it only has my table layout.I don't know if this makes sense!! Please help!

Answer:
In the XSL, you can attach, import or put inline your CSS just like you would any other html page. You do not format your XML. Make your life even easier, and use an XSLT page.

Question : How do you add XML/XSL data to a html page?
I am working with XML XSL basic stuff, and I get the parsered date when I think type in http://localhost/test.xml But I want to add the data to a html page and style it with CSS. But How?

Answer:
http://www.w3schools.com/xml/default.aspclick on the above link... i cud have told you but you must learn to search.

Question : How do I avoid errors in Internet Explorer when using xsl and xml and the xsl is not where it should be?
I am using an XSL file to format an xml document. The idea is that the two files will be in the same directory and when the user double clicks on the .xml file it will be displayed nicely in Internet Explorer. The problem is that if Internet Explorer can't find the .xsl file it shows an error and won't display the xml file. Is there anyway that I can get it to display the xml file like it normally does if you don't have a stylesheet associated with it if it does not find the .xsl file instead of displaying the error message?I am doing this all on the client side. So the .xml and .xsl files would be on a local directory on the user's machine.

Answer:
I don't think it is a bug. If an xml file uses an xsl file, it is reported by IE because the display would not be as expected by the xml author. I am not aware of any way to supress this error.

Question : How to decrypt a message log history..a XSL spreadsheet file?
i found a history log message from messenger and i tried to open it.... it comes up into windows explorer and is lettering with lots of >< but i cant actually read what was written. can anyone please help me decode this or figure it out?? i suspect my husband of cheating, as all his msn message history is always deleted and this is the only thing i have :( and i cant read it!! lol thank you for your help and time :) 10 points i promise!

Answer:
I'm not sure you'll have much luck. The XSL is a style sheet for XML files. It's like a CSS file is a style sheet for HTML. HTML has the data, CSS has the formatting. Well, XML would be the logfile and XSL will be how to display it.That said, if you want to send me the file, I can take a look and see if I can discover something. nigel@sysadmininc.com
