Question : What is the difference between Windows and Linux web hosting ?
What is the difference between Windows and Linux web hosting ?

Answer:
Installing Ubuntu Hardy Heron as a web hosting serverThe Perfect Server - Ubuntu Hardy Heron (Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Server)http://www.howtoforge.com/perfect-server-ubuntu8.04-ltsFriends of mine would use nothing else and prior to Ubuntu 8.04 LTS they were using Ubuntu 6.06 LTS so apart from the upgrade they saw no reason to changeLUg.

Question : How do you design a website that is compatible with Linux Web Hosting?
I don't know anything about web design. What programs are compatable with Linux Web Hosting? What would you recommend? Do you know about any good templates compatable with Linux Web Hosting?

Answer:
it does not matter, K-Disk is spreading missinformation don't listen to him.Make a site and it'll run on either.

Question : What is the most powerful firewall for a Linux web-server?
A software firewall not a hardware one.

Answer:
Various answers here. Some firewalls (Linux) come with a web server, others just run on separate PC's.Check out Distrowatch.com for the various firewalls. Some like Endian and ClarkConnect come with web servers embedded. Others like IPCop and Monowall are basic firewalls/routers.http://distrowatch.com/search.php?category=Firewall&origin=All&basedon=All&desktop =All&architecture=All&status=ActiveI run my web servers on a dedicated Ubuntu server, with ISPConfig as the admin tool for multiple sites and security.I then run a separate PC with a Linux firewall on the front end.

Question : Which of these Distros should I choose for my Linux web server?
I am ordering a dedicated server and have the option to choose one these for the OS:FreeBSD 7.2Debian 5.0.1CentOS 5.3They are all the latest stable release. So which should I choose, which would be the best for handling heavy traffic, and security?

Answer:
OK....So the two answers you have so far is a guy recommending a distro he's admittedly never used before and another for a distro that isn't even in your list of choices.I've been a UNIX and Linux administrator for several years and used all of these operating systems. At work I have CentOS on several boxes running webservers and they are flawless with more than 10000 hits on it every day. FreeBSD is as solid as an OS gets but harder to find apps if you want to turn your webserver into something else later. Debian is rarely used for any enterprise system. From my system administration and hands on experience with all of these choices I would go with CentOS.

Question : How to FTP Linux web logs to Windows server?
Ive been trying to figure out a script that can run on a windows 2003 server that will ftp web logs from a linux box back to the windows box on a daily basis. I can probably set the script in a schedule in the windows box but how do I write the script that will do the ftp work?I could use a hand on the syntax for a script that will do this. The FTP settings are ready I really just need the syntax on the batch script. I assume it's like xcopy something something right?

Answer:
A simple batch file is all you need. FTP was intended to be used in scripts.http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/batch.mspx?mf r=true

Question : What's the difference between Linux web hosting and Windows web hosting.?
I just want to know what it means so I don't waste my money on the wrong thing.

Answer:
Nothing really, except you can't host IIS (ASP, ASP.net) on Non-Windows computers (apache discontinued support). The best webhosts (longest running without any downtime) are actually using BSD. Surprisingly Win2k3 is going strong too.http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/today/top.avg.html

Question : Which is better, linux web hosting or windows web hosting?
What are the pros and cons of linux and windows web hosting.

Answer:
Linux: much more power on much less computer. more friendly toward sharing the machine with other purposes (email server, news server, ftp server, chat server, etc). more secure. more stableWindows: more menu driven. easier for multiple people to administrate. more familiar for users if you give user accounts on the system

Question : Whats the difference between Windows web hosting and linux web hosting ..& which one is more better ?
Whats the difference between Windows web hosting and linux web hosting ..& which one is more better ?

Question : How to convert linux web server to windows 2003 server?
Currently at work im going to convert linux web server to windows 2003 server but im not sure how to do it? Can some one tell me step by step to show mw how to do it? Since im not linux a person.

Answer:
I did this a couple of years ago (and I'm not a Linux guy either). First, you need to know what you're running on the Linux box. Your web server is probably Apache. Are you running Perl/PHP/MySQL? You will likely want to run those same services on the Windows box. If you're running Apache on Linux, are you going to stay with it on Windows or run IIS? Basically, you get everything running on the Windows server that's running on the Linux server, then move your content over. Sorry, but I don't have room (or the inclination) to write a step-by-step procedure.

Question : How do I find out if I have a Linux Web Server or not?
Checking the Properties of My Computer shows: System: Microsoft Windows XP, Home Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 2. I found out that I can have a Windows XP Operating System as well as a Linux Operating System but I don't know if this also determines my web server or not and how to determine whether I have a Linux Web Server or not.First: The reason why I need to find out this answer is that I was told in answer to another Yahoo question about how to install a redirect: "If you have a Linux Web server, then do this..."Secondly: Microsoft Help says "NOTE: Windows XP and Linux can coexist on the same computer. For additional information, refer to your Linux documentation." Well, I know I have windows. I don't know if I don't have Linux. One problem is that I don't know where to find my Linux documentation--isn't there some place on my computer where I should be able to look this data up?

Answer:
You have Windows. Linux is another operating system. It sounds like you are purchasing webspace somewhere and are unsure if you want to go with a Windows or Linux Web Server? I will answer the question from this point of view. The server is the computer that will have your website on the internet. You can go either way, your home computer OS does not have to be "compatible" with your Web Server. HTML and web scripting can be written on one OS and hosted on a different one.Linux software is free, so hosting is usually cheaper. You'll probably get Apache web server (the program that actually handles the website - probably the msot popular on the web), MySQL Database, and atleast PHP support. This setup is ideal for most websites. Linux is very reliable for any sort of hosting.Windows Server is more expensive, but supports ASP.NET. .NET Web applications can be very powerful, but will be useless to you if you don't take advantage of it.Probably the cheaper hosting plan is better, go with Linux.(Hopefully this is what you are looking for.)
