Questions & Answers
Question : How do I run a web browser from linux command line?
I an VERY new to linux. I have installed Fedora 5 in text mode. I have a Linux book and am trying to slowly learn linux. So from the console, or command line, how do I run a web browser. Also how do I run the X Windows System?
Answer:
If you installed in text mode, maybe you didn't install X. You probably have a text mode browser. Try lynx or elinks. If the startx command doesn't work, try "yum install x-window-system". By the way, Fedora 5 is old. The current version of Fedora is 9.

Question : How to convert linux web server to windows 2003 server?
Currently at work im going to convert linux web server to windows 2003 server but im not sure how to do it? Can some one tell me step by step to show mw how to do it? Since im not linux a person.
Answer:
I did this a couple of years ago (and I'm not a Linux guy either). First, you need to know what you're running on the Linux box. Your web server is probably Apache. Are you running Perl/PHP/MySQL? You will likely want to run those same services on the Windows box. If you're running Apache on Linux, are you going to stay with it on Windows or run IIS? Basically, you get everything running on the Windows server that's running on the Linux server, then move your content over. Sorry, but I don't have room (or the inclination) to write a step-by-step procedure.

Question : What is the difference between Windows web hosting and Linux web hosting?
Which is better for performance and security? I don't know anything about PHP, website design, database, etc. I will be using a template design from MS Publisher. What would you recommend?
Answer:
All websites today currently run on either a Windows web server or a Linux-based server. The vast majority of websites run on a Linux-based platform as Linux has a strong reputation for security and web server performance. With standard (static) HTML-based websites, the web hosting platform doesn't make much difference. When it does make a difference, however, is when the website uses a dynamic scripting technology such as ASP (A Microsoft based technology), or PHP / PERL (Linux based technologies). A Windows-based hosting solution will run a Microsoft Windows server with IIS (Internet Information Server), and is necessary to run an ASP / ASP.NET scripted website. A Linux-based platform is typically used for PHP, Perl, and most other types of websites. Basically, unless your website uses ASP (pages ending in the .asp extention), Windows hosting is not neccessary.Take a look at: http://bluehost-service.atspace.com . I’m sure it would work for you and fulfill all your requirements. They have a really great offer & I have used them for over 3 yrs now, and have never had a single problem with them. Their service is really great and easy to use.

Question : What is the best linux distro for web development?
I've been getting into web development these past few months, w/ html, php, mysql, javascript so far. I'd like to start developing on a linux system though, as I've currently only had experience doing it on windows. Any recommendations for a good distro geared toward development/servers?Thanks!
Answer:
There is more than one way to answer that question--but if you look around on the Internet, you will see that many sites are hosted on Apache running on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). For this reason, I would probably use CentOS as a development platform--it's RHEL re-compiled without the Red Hat trademarks, but it's otherwise identical. Real-world experience with CentOS would give you useful experience when you encounter RHEL in the wild.http://distrowatch.com/index.php?distribution=centos&month=all&year=all~~ ScienceMikeyBest-of-Breed Free Software for Windows:http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/opcc/links/01___Software_related_information_001198934133 /Windows_related_link_001119378867/Software____Links_an_001081730158/Best_of_breed_Free_s_0010599276 70

Question : what is the most easy to learn: Linux administration or web development?
I am a 48 PC Technician and would like to switch into the Linux or Windows Administration field. But I was wondering if the web development would be also a good alternative? If yes some recommendations will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Answer:
Web development is definitely easier, however, this means that there is plenty of competition. If you can train yourself to become a solid Linux admin, you will have less trouble finding jobs that pay well in the long run.

Question : What's the difference between Linux web hosting and Windows web hosting.?
I just want to know what it means so I don't waste my money on the wrong thing.
Answer:
Nothing really, except you can't host IIS (ASP, ASP.net) on Non-Windows computers (apache discontinued support). The best webhosts (longest running without any downtime) are actually using BSD. Surprisingly Win2k3 is going strong too.http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/today/top.avg.html

Question : Which of these Distros should I choose for my Linux web server?
I am ordering a dedicated server and have the option to choose one these for the OS:FreeBSD 7.2Debian 5.0.1CentOS 5.3They are all the latest stable release. So which should I choose, which would be the best for handling heavy traffic, and security?
Answer:
OK....So the two answers you have so far is a guy recommending a distro he's admittedly never used before and another for a distro that isn't even in your list of choices.I've been a UNIX and Linux administrator for several years and used all of these operating systems. At work I have CentOS on several boxes running webservers and they are flawless with more than 10000 hits on it every day. FreeBSD is as solid as an OS gets but harder to find apps if you want to turn your webserver into something else later. Debian is rarely used for any enterprise system. From my system administration and hands on experience with all of these choices I would go with CentOS.
