Customer Review :
Excellent Book
This book has been super useful. I was new to development with MySQL and among the 3 or 4 MySQL books I got, this is the go-to book I use. It's very thorough, explains things clearly, and has lots of concise examples to show statements in use. Highly recommend it.
Rating :
Great resource
Great book, describes from Beginner to Moderate-advanced topics. This could be considered "the" manual for MySql.
Rating :
Good Book
I haven't had a chance to go through the entire book but based on what I have read so far all the information that I need to setup, maintain and access data through a MySQL database seems to be there. I would recommend this for folks new to MySQL.

Good introduction, perfect reference
If you're looking for a book on MySQL, this is clearly the one. It's up-to-date for MySQL 5 (MySQL 6 is not yet ready for wide release), it effectively explains generic SQL concepts like inner/outer joins, and, of course, it's a comprehensive guide to the peculiarities of MySQL. Even if you're using MySQL through an abstraction layer, such as Hibernate, you'll still find the information on configuration useful.

Editorial Review :
Compared to industrial-strength database products such as Microsoft's SQL Server, Access is a breeze to use. It runs on PCs rather than servers and is ideal for small- to mid-sized businesses and households. But Access is still intimidating to learn. It doesn't help that each new version crammed in yet another set of features; so many, in fact, that even the pros don't know where to find them all. Access 2007 breaks this pattern with some of the most dramatic changes users have seen since Office 95. Most obvious is the thoroughly redesigned user interface, with its tabbed toolbar (or "Ribbon") that makes features easy to locate and use. The features list also includes several long-awaited changes. One thing that hasn't improved is Microsoft's documentation. To learn the ins and outs of all the features in Access 2007, Microsoft merely offers online help. Access 2007: The Missing Manual was written from the ground up for this redesigned application. You will learn how to design complete databases, maintain them, search for valuable nuggets of information, and build attractive forms for quick-and-easy data entry. You'll even delve into the black art of Access programming (including macros and Visual Basic), and pick up valuable tricks and techniques to automate common tasks -- even if you've never touched a line of code before. You will also learn all about the new prebuilt databases you can customize to fit your needs, and how the new complex data feature will simplify your life. With plenty of downloadable examples, this objective and witty book will turn an Access neophyte into a true master.

Brilliant guide
This is one of the best text books that I have ever used. For a novice or an experienced user, this book will help you to explore the various tools available with the 2007 version of Access. And with the downloadable examples, it is very easy to see how the explinations work on a real system. If you're going to be using Access 2007, I would suggest having this book near by.

Detailed How To Manual for Access
This book contains information on may aspects of Access from basic to advanced. It saves you having to Bing or use Microsoft help when you try to figure out something new.

Contractions are not helpful!
This book contains a wealth of information about Access 2007. There are many hints and kinks that a seasoned Access programmer will find helpful. That is the reason for 4 stars ... BUT ...
This is the first book by O'Reilly press that looked like a college student who failed English 101 was the editor. The use of contractions throughout the text is driving me batty. Especially when the writer AND the editor both get it wrong. For example, speaking of the importance of using a primary key field in order to avoid duplicate records ... "you can't have two identical records. (At worst, they'll [sic] be two almost identical records" ... ) "They" had no action on the records ... the correct contraction is "there'll," which is horrible grammar. For this I would have given 1 star.
OK, enough picking at an otherwise good book. I am still reading the book and learning about the many tricks of Access 2007. However, I am almost ready to torch the book for poor readability, all for the sake of being 'familiar' with the readers. Skip it and write a technical book with proper grammar.

Yep, I Love the Title AND the SERIES!!
I have always said that the Missing Manual Series is the best software trainer out there. O'Reilly bills the series as the missing manuals for the software programs. They are. They are great and any review that says otherwise is wrong, And, no I don't have anything to do with the publisher!!

Helped Me
This is well written and helps me bridge the gap between what is necessary and what I wish was intuitive.

Book is terrible
Some of the reviews warned me about the content of this book being inadequate but I wanted to try it anyway. They were right- this book is terrible. But I was so starved for some type of documentation I remained hopeful. Dont waste your money

Don't Use this Book to Learn Cognos 8 If You are a Beginner
If you need a book to learn how to use Cognos 8 or plan to use this book for training, DO NOT use this book. If one is already familiar with Cognos and needs to have a reference book, than this book is okay. If you need to learn Cognos from the ground up, do not waste your money on this book. Find something else or take a training class.
Rating :
This book will not "guide" you to become a good Cognos developer
I cannot say I have read this book completely, but I am currently trying to learn how to use Cognos 8.4 and as I work with the product I find myself turning to this book to clarify something or teach me something. Each time, I come up empty.
This books appears to have only the most high level information, it goes into no detail whatsoever. It spends only a page or two on some very big topics.
There seems to be a lack of Cognos BI books out there, but trust me, this book is not going to help you all that much. If you want a very high-level overview of some of the Cognos features, without going into too much detail on how to really work with the tool, and if your company is paying for the book, then by all means pick this up. Otherwise, steer clear of this book, it's useless for in-depth details on how to use Cognos 8.4 BI.

Some Samples Don't Work
Like an idiot, I spent $75 on this book (Barns and Noble). I would have got a better deal on Amazon here going thru one of the used book dealers. Please don't buy this book new like I did - you'll be wasting your money. They call this book the official guide and I'm really surprised they did that. I had problems with several of the examples as they seemed to have left out important information. Specifically the examples on pages 277, 259 and 329. Those pages deal with placing totals on subgroups when using a union query, editing a query on a singleton and inserting hierarchies into reports. Another important example they should have included is using a drill through to details on the same report. On some of these examples, you are better off using the "Try it yourself" sections in the Cognos help file. Some of the book's sections are really good like Framework Manager. To make matters worse, they have no online reference for the corrections like Wrox publications does. Overall, shame on McGraw Hill for putting their name on such a rag of a book!

Where's my book?
I would love to review the book, but I am still waiting for my copy. I ordered a copy from Amazon.com on June 24th with an SLA end date of July 10th. Today, July 18th, I am still waiting for my copy. No communication from either the seller or Amazon.com.
The book is a must for my business. We are upgrading to Cognos 8 and I need the book for reference.

Question : SQL in microsoft access
Hello everyone In fact I am a 15 yr old student who has a complete walkthrough on sql... now i wanna use it in access. my question is that how i do that where do i type the sql commands is it when doing queries like where do i write them in tables where
Answer:
Go into the Queries object (listed under Tables). Click "New", a dialog box comes up. Select "Design view". The query design screen opens up, and a second box comes up, prompting you to add a table or query. If you want to go straight to SQL, just close this box, and on the menu click View -> SQL.Jim is completely wrong about Access, Access can certainly handle complex queries in forms and reports. I have built a complete book lending & circulation system using Access, with multiple forms, reports, label printing etc.
