Shows you how to use ActiveX form controls, traditional bookmarks, and embedded Excel worksheets to create forms in Word. We will use a checklist that use these three concepts (ActiveX form controls, embedded Excel worksheets, and traditional bookmarks and references) and also add a flowchart to the checklist. ActiveX controls don’t need form locking (either for a section or the entire form) but have limited formatting without using VBA (Visual Basic for Applications). To overcome some of those formatting limitations of ActiveX controls, an embedded Excel worksheet can be used. This allows you to overcome the formatting problem without locking the form, but adds to the size of the file. It also allows you to add features that are unique to Excel, such as a dynamic hyperlink, to your Word documents. With a change to one or more drop down boxes, you can create a new hyperlink. I use one at the end of the checklist to link to the current monthly billing worksheet. Bookmarks are a really cool feature in Word that allows you to write something once (setting the bookmark) and repeat it multiple times (reference to the bookmark). This volume uses traditional bookmarks which use a square bracket ([ ]) on either side of the bookmark with the bookmark contents between the brackets.

Editorial Review :

Speech software has been a hot topic in the computer industry for as long as there have been computers. Computer speech has been around in one form or another for over 30 years, but early speech software could only run on very big and expensive computer hardware. Thanks to Microsoft, the size of your computer is no longer a major limitation to computer speech. Just like with so many other computer technologies, it took Microsoft to make speech software easy to program, and even easier for PC users to use speech to control their Windows software applications. With Windows Visual Basic ActiveX Voice Control Automation Services, Speech API (SAPI) and Speech Suite Software Development Kit (SDK), complex computer speech synthesis, and even speech recognition, has become more accessible to all programmers for use in their multi-media business, education and recreational applications. This book offers the reader a detailed exploration of Windows Speech Automation Services via Visual Basic ActiveX Voice Controls available in MS Speech API Versions 4.0 to 5.1, as well as third-party SAPI vendor SDKs such as IBM ViaVoice and Dragon NatSpeak. It provides a thorough introduction to Windows Speech Recognition Programming for beginning as well as advanced programmers.

Editorial Review :

The book deals with troublesome, frequently encountered, high-profile tasks chosen with input from Microsoft "RM" support engineers and the user ed/development team at Microsoft. The recommended coding techniques included have been reviewed by key MFC developers.

The topics are sorted into a number of sections -- for example, "Dialog Boxes", "Controls", and "MFC Database Classes". Each section begins with a general descriptive article and then treats a set of common and important developmental challenges. The text is supplemented by a selection of pertinent Knowledge Base articles on disc in a convenient HTML format.

Questions & Answers
Question : How do you stop activeX from being blocked?
I made a program(html) as a project and get annoyed having to click unblock on every new page. Is there a way to always allow activeX and scripts to run? My browser is internet explorer.

Answer:
Internet Options->Advanced->Allow active content to run in files on my computer <- check this checkbox.

Question : How do I repair ActiveX controller on my computer?
I was trying to watch a video a few days ago and it wouldn’t play. It gave an error message that said something about an ActiveX controller being in error. Is there any way I can repair ActiveX controllers without sending my computer in to a repair shop? It seems like it should be something that normal people can fix. Please help.

Answer:
The good news is that it isn’t hard to fix this problem. The bad news is that you had better do it soon, or your computer might crash. Here’s an idea of what’s going on.ActiveX controllers are stored in your computer’s registry. This is a section set aside to store the controlling files for all your programs, including the operating system. When this starts getting cluttered or files get lost, the first thing you might notice is that your computer starts running slower. Then you start getting error messages. Then your computer crashes.Chances are, since you’re getting error messages for ActiveX now, there are probably hundreds of other problems in your registry that haven’t come to the surface yet. If you don’t fix it now, it only gets worse.Just a few years ago, you would have had to send your computer to the shop. Now they’ve developed registry cleaning programs to take care of this. The best one I’ve seen is here: http://optimize-your-pc.com/regcure/activex_errors.php. I’ve compared it to several other registry programs, and it’s hands down the winner. It’s faster, easier to use, and more thorough than the others. Highly recommended.

Question : How do I install the Toontown Activex Control without getting redirected every time?
Whenever that white bar comes, I click on the 'Install ActiveX Control' thing, but it always redirects me back to the Toontown homepage.Im very very frustrated because Ive tried it about a hundred times. Please HELP!

Answer:
You've got to install ActiveX from Microsoft's Windows Update page. Linkage depends on the version of Windows that you are using. There are tons of reasons why you may have trouble installing the ActiveX update, or the Toontown ActiveX control. The most common is probably security settings on your 'puter, or a 3rd party security program blocking the installation. For example, in Windows XP, you need to be logged into Windows with an account with Administrator privs.

Allow ActiveX controls to run 1 Start Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall. 2 Double-click Personal Firewall. 3 On the Firewall tab, click Default Level. The slider is reset to Medium, which is the recommended setting. If you want to change the default security level, then click Custom Level, but do not change any settings for ActiveX controls. 4 Click OK.

Question : How do you use an Excel ActiveX combo box to link to a cell and display NUMBERS?
I've been dealing with an assignment for the past two weeks where part of the question requires me to link a cell (the value 1 is linked to one equation, 2 is linked to another) using a combo box. At the point I'm at, the number I get to show up in my link cell display 1 and 2, but as text NOT numbers. How can I remedy this?! Using another ActiveX box is not an option.

Answer:
What cell is to contain the result of the formula, based on the selection made in the combobox? You basically have two options.Create an event handler based on the ComboBox1_Click event.Use an 'IF' statement in the cell to contain the variable result, based on the '1' or '2' returned in the linked cell.

Question : What should I do in Dreamweaver to get rid of the activex warning in IE7 on a basic HTML page I make?
Whenever I make a basic HTML page (2 columns with header and footer) in Dreamweaver, and I preview it in IE7, an activex warning pops up. However I havent put anything fancy, and I dont get this warning when I go on sites that have flash or anything either.

Answer:
Well, i too have seen the same problem. But once you upload the files to a web server, the access it from there, no activex warning comes. IE7 may be showing this warning may be because some elements in your code needs access to the internet. Anyways, I these days I am using BlueVoda in addition to Dreamweaver, because creating a page in BlueVoda is much easier and faster as compared to dreamweaver.BlueVoda: http://www.vodahost.com/partner/idevaffiliate.php?id=10787_1_3_9
